“The man that hath no music in himself…

Nor is not mov’d with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.”  -William Shakespeare

In the realm of reality, lies a power that comes deep from within.  It is a power that is beyond words, but can invoke the highest forms of thought.  It gives more than it takes and can take all that you are.  I speak of the power that is contained in music.  There is nothing that can inspire hope more than a piece of beauty immortalized.  This is music.  Thoughts many times transcend that which we try to express in words.  Music is that bridge which can express a thought, that can say it all saying so little…in one Melody.

“In every idea emanating from genius, or even in every serious human idea — born in the human brain — there always remains something — some sediment — which cannot be expressed to others, though one wrote volumes and lectured upon it for five-and-thirty years. There is always a something, a remnant, which will never come out from your brain, but will remain there with you, and you alone, for ever and ever, and you will die, perhaps, without having imparted what may be the very essence of your idea to a single living soul.” ― F.D.

From an early age I found this connection and it has never left me.  The connection to this beauty that is hard to express.  I find this beauty in nature abundant; the extension of this is naturally in music.  That which is in nature, speaks truly to ourselves.  The highest piece of art can only touch the surface.  Thus comes the bridge in understanding this beauty in nature, of which I perceive to be music.  This is a connection that cannot be taught.  It must come from within, from the deepest reaches of the soul.  Only then can one truly understand even an inkling of this power.  The power of nature and that which is expressed by it.

One of my fondest memories as a youth was discovering this power of music.  It began a slow transformation from the mundane world, into an extraordinary world full of endless possibility.  Particularly I was drawn to music which was composed.  I speak of such pieces that actually took time, thought and more importantly deep introspection.  Sometimes this can be achieved through someone’s lifetime.  Oftentimes, it cannot.  This is the divide between the real music and that which is untrue to nature.  That which is false.  True music  cannot be false to itself.  Therefore, when one truly finds these things within themselves, then the true music of life begins to appear.

If ever there was a hope in this dim world.  If ever there was a respite from the misery and wretched lies in this life…it is in music.  I am still in awe of this beauty.  I still sit almost bewildered that so much beauty can exist in one place.  I often feel overwhelmed that such feelings can take such a strong hold of you.  In one instant of a true Melody, you can discover that which is nature.  It is such a profound place.  These feelings that would otherwise be inexpressible can finally be attached to something of truth; something almost tangible.

I can still remember the first time I heard this music.  Something really hit me.  Suddenly a million different realms of existence were present.  Suddenly the sun was so warm, the clouds melted all through me and the height of it all was almost to the point of being unbearable.  It was true love personified through someone’s careful work.  Someone, something taking hold of your innermost thoughts and in that one moment…love and beauty were a deep reality.

Music is not necessarily that which we tangibly call it so.  It is something that surpasses a human ability to truly comprehend.  It just is what it is and when it becomes apparent, there is no denying its presence.  It is an all engulfing feeling that you have become nature and nature is you.  It is the unbearable feeling of just being, that which can escape so many because of its simplicity.

  1. There is definitely a special quality to music that makes it different from all other art forms. To Schopenhauer, music was the purest form of art because it allowed the artist to express himself directly to the listener. Other art forms, such as painting, writing or sculpting, require symbols to represent higher concepts. Symbols that can be easily misinterpreted. Since music is inherently abstract, it is free from this inherent limitation present in most other art.

I think this is where most of music’s power lies. No other art form is better at expressing the transcendent parts of the world.

    1. I most certainly agree that it captures those things that escape other art forms. I have a special connection to it. It inspires me in so many ways. Also, there is no greater truth than finding it in music. Many things can be truly deceptive , but I found most often than not for me…true music can never be false to itself and in turn to you when you hear it. Therefore, the world becomes a little more true(and beautiful) in my eyes.

  2. Music possesses a quality that no other form of expression can replicate: the ability to convey an idea simply by listening to it. We can read books and poems and look at art to gain a deeper meaning of their expressions, but they will never be as easy to interpret as music is (that is not to say that they have any less value). It is an expression that needs no words or images to imbue the listener with it’s true meaning. That is truly a great thing to behold.

  3. I can never speak on the entire depth of this subject. Haven’t even nearly touched the surface. I spent most of my living years searching the world upside down looking for the truth in music and the music of truth. It is a quest that I forever wish to be on. It really helps me find beauty on the days where I cannot bear the reality of that which is “life”. I intend to spend a major amount of time speaking on this blog about this subject because I feel that I have touched on some things that may have escaped others. If anything, just finding one good Melody can make a “world “out of “an abstract plane”.
